Exfoliating Before Shaving: Smoother Skin
Exfoliating before shaving removes dead skin cells, prepares the skin, lifts facial hair and helps minimize irritation and ingrown hairs.
7 BARBER / PLZEŇExfoliating before shaving is a simple secret to a smoother shave that many men overlook. Removing dead skin cells prepares the skin, lifts facial hair and helps minimize irritation.
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface. These cells can clog pores, cause ingrown hairs and make shaving more difficult. There are two main types: physical exfoliation with a scrub and chemical exfoliation with acids.
Why exfoliate before shaving?
Lifts facial hair: The razor can cut it more effectively. Helps prevent ingrown hairs: Clean skin reduces the risk of hairs growing beneath the surface. Smoother glide: The razor meets fewer obstacles. Less irritation: There is less pulling and scraping.
Physical exfoliation
A scrub contains fine particles that physically remove dead cells. Apply it to damp skin, massage gently in circles for 30–60 seconds and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid aggressive pressure.
Chemical exfoliation
AHA and BHA acids, such as glycolic or salicylic acid, loosen dead cells without friction. Follow the product instructions and use a concentration appropriate for your skin.
The correct routine
- Wash your face with lukewarm water
- Apply the exfoliating product
- Massage it in or leave it on as instructed
- Rinse thoroughly
- Warm the skin
- Apply shaving product and shave
How often should you exfoliate?
For most men, two or three times a week is enough. Exfoliating too frequently can irritate and dry out the skin.
Important warning
Never exfoliate irritated, injured or sunburned skin. Use SPF after exfoliation. If you have acne or another skin condition, consult a dermatologist.
