Men's perfume: How to choose the right fragrance

Perfume is invisible accessory, which completes the overall impression. The right fragrance can boost confidence, leave a lasting impression and become your personal signature. But how do you know your way around the plethora of options?

Basics of perfume concentrations

Eau de Cologne (EDC): 2-4% perfume oils, lasts 2 hours. Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5-15%, lasts 3-5 hours. Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15-20%, lasts 6-8 hours. Parfum/Extrait: 20-30%, lasts all day.

For everyday use, EDT or EDP is the best choice.

Fragrance families

Citrus: Fresh, energetic – bergamot, lemon, orange. Ideal for summer and daytime. Aromatic: Herbs – lavender, rosemary, sage. An elegant classic. Woody: Warm, masculine – cedar, sandalwood, vetiver. For evening and winter.

Oriental: Spicy, sensual – amber, vanilla, spices. For special occasions. Fougère: Classic barbershop – lavender, oak, coumarin. Timeless elegance.

Top notes: First impression, fades in 15-30 minutes. Middle/Heart: Main character, lasts 3-4 hours. Base notes: Base of the fragrance, lasts the longest. When choosing wait at least 30 minutesbefore deciding – the initial scent is not the final one.

How to choose a perfume

1. Test on your own skin – not on paper
2. Do not test more than 3-4 fragrances at once
3. Wait for the fragrance to develop (30+ minutes)
4. Consider the occasion – work, evening, sports
5. Season affects perception – lighter in summer, heavier in winter

Application perfume

Apply to pulse points: wrist, neck, behind the ears, chest. Don't spray in the air and walk around – you're wasting. Do not rub your wrists together – it breaks up the fragrance molecules. Less is more – 2-3 sprays are enough.

Building a collection

Ideally have 3-4 perfumes for different situations: everyday fresh, evening elegant, special occasions, summer/winter variant. Quality over quantity – one quality perfume is better than ten cheap ones.

Perfume life

Store the perfume in a dark and cold, ideally in the original box. Avoid bathrooms (humidity, heat). Properly stored perfume will last 3-5 years, some even longer.
