Hair gel was once a staple of men’s styling, then fell out of favor and is now returning in modern formulas. Despite all the newer products, gel still has its place — if you know when and how to use it.

What hair gel does

Gel provides strong hold and shine. Once dry, it creates a firm structure that keeps the hair in place. Unlike pastes and waxes, gel hardens — which can be either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the desired result.

When to use hair gel

Slick backs and pompadours: Gel keeps the hair close to the head. Wet look: It creates a glossy finish. Spiky hair: It provides firm hold. Formal occasions: It creates a controlled appearance.

When not to use hair gel

Gel is less suitable for natural or messy styles, fine hair that is easily weighed down, and dry or damaged hair when the formula contains alcohol.

Types of hair gel

Light hold: Flexible with less shine. Medium hold: Versatile for most situations. Strong hold: Maximum control. Wet look: Extreme shine and a distinctly wet appearance.

How to apply hair gel correctly

1. Start with damp hair
2. Rub a pea-sized amount between your palms
3. Apply it evenly from the roots
4. Shape the style with a comb or your fingers
5. Let it dry naturally or use a hair dryer
6. Once dry, avoid touching the hair

Modern gels versus older formulas

Modern formulas are more flexible, contain moisturizing ingredients and are easier to wash out. Look for alcohol-free gels with added oils or keratin.
