The beginnings of the barber chair

In ancient times, barbers worked with what they had – customers sat on ordinary chairs or stools. The first specialized lounge chairs appeared in 18th century – these were wooden chairs with a headrest and armrests, often reclining for shaving.

Revolution of the 19th century

The turning point came in 1850s with the invention of the hydraulic lifting mechanism. Eugene Berninghaus introduced the first commercially successful hydraulic chair in 1878. The barber could simply adjust the height of the customer without bending over. This innovation remains the standard to this day.

In the late 19th century, other improvements came: swivel base, adjustable back and footrest, porcelain or leather upholstery.

The Golden Age of Barber Chairs

1900-1950 was the golden age of American barber chairs. Brands like Koken, Theo A. Kochs and Emil J. Paidar produced true works of art. Chairs from this era are now collector's items – an original Koken from the 1920s can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Modern barber chairs

Today’s chairs combine retro aesthetics with modern comfort. Hydraulic systems are more reliable, upholstery more durable, materials easier to maintain. Many barbershops deliberately choose a vintage-inspired design for an authentic atmosphere.

Functions of a modern chair: hydraulic lifting, 360° rotation, tilting back (for shaving), removable headrest, integrated tool holders.
