Buzz cut: clipper length, upkeep and the difference from a fade
A buzz cut can use one length or have shorter sides. Learn how to describe the finish you want and choose the right haircut service.
7 BARBER / PLZEŇA buzz cut is a short haircut created mainly with clippers. It can use the same length across the head or have shorter sides. A buzz cut with a detailed fade involves different work from a simple clipper cut using one or two lengths.
Which length should you choose?
Agree on a length in millimetres or ask to see the intended guard. Guard numbers alone may not represent the same length across different clipper systems. “Really short” is also unclear: you might mean a few millimetres of hair or a completely smooth head.
If you are unsure about going short, start with a longer option. Discuss how much scalp you want to show and what you want around the ears, neckline and front hairline. Very short hair makes the shape of the head, hairline and differences in density more visible.
One length, shorter sides or a fade?
- One length: a straightforward look without a strong difference between the top and sides.
- Two lengths: the top stays longer than the sides. Agree on how those lengths should connect before the cut.
- Buzz cut with a fade: a short top is combined with a gradual transition at the sides. You choose the fade's height and shortest length separately.
Our fade haircut guide explains low, mid, high and skin finishes. A smooth head shave is another result altogether; it is not the same as leaving a few millimetres with clippers.
What upkeep involves
A short top generally needs less shaping than a longer hairstyle, but washing and regular trimming still belong in the routine. Choose your next appointment according to regrowth and the finish you want to maintain. Take side and back photos of the finished cut and note the lengths. At the next visit, you can explain exactly what to keep or change.
