Drop fade: the curve behind the ear and how to choose your version

A drop fade follows a line that dips behind the ear towards the back of the head. “Drop” describes the transition's shape, not a fixed height or shortest length. It can sit low or higher and can leave short hair at the bottom or finish at skin.

What makes a drop fade different?

The key views are from the side and back: the transition curves down behind the ear and changes the outline around the back of the head. Both the amount of the dip and the width of the blend can vary. A front photo alone often cannot explain the result you want.

How to choose your version

• Height and curve: show how high the transition should sit in front of the ear and how far it should dip behind it.
• Shortest length: explain whether you want visible skin or some short hair remaining.
• Top shape: agree on length and volume across the top and back.
• Beard: if you have one, discuss how the sideburns should connect to its shape.

For a middle height, read about the mid fade. The term mid drop fade combines the two ideas: a transition at a middle height that dips behind the ear.

Reference photos and realistic expectations

Bring two photos of the same cut, preferably a side view and a back view. Explain whether you mainly like the curved line, the contrast at the sides or the shape on top. Your barber can discuss those features separately in relation to your hair density, growth direction and head shape.

If you want to keep more volume at the back, say so explicitly. “Drop” alone does not determine how much hair remains above the transition. It also does not guarantee a longer-lasting finish than another fade; judge regrowth against the look you want to maintain.
