7 BARBER / PLZEŇFood and beard have a complicated relationship. Sauces, soups, sandwiches – all pose a risk to your carefully groomed beard. Learning to eat with a beard is an art that every bearded man must master.
The biggest enemies of the beard
Soups and sauces: Classic – mustache dipped in tomato sauce. Sandwiches and burgers: Requires the mouth to stretch, the beard gets in the way. Ice cream and foamy drinks: White marks on the moustache. Crunchy food: Crumbs get caught in the beard. BBQ and ketchup: Red stains are visible.
Eating with a beard technique
Smaller bites: The smaller the bite, the less chance of contact with the beard. Utensils: Use a fork and knife even for foods you would otherwise eat hands. Straw: For drinks, but not for formal occasions. Napkins on hand: Continuously check and clean.
Strategies for problem foods
Soup: Put the spoon from the bottom of the mouth, not from the side. Less liquid on the spoon = less risk. Burger: Squeeze from the top, eat smaller pieces from the edge. Alternatively, take apart and eat with cutlery. Pasta: Short pasta is safer than spaghetti. Beer: Tilt the glass, drink slowly, with a tissue handy.
Protecting the mustache while eating
The mustache is the most vulnerable part. Tips: Before eating, apply mustache wax – to create a barrier. Some „mustache“ devices (mustache guards) exist, but they are more of a curiosity. The best protection is the eating technique.
What to do if an accident happens
Immediately: Gently wipe with a napkin (do not rub, rather tap). After eating: Rinse thoroughly with water. Greasy stains: A little beard shampoo or soap. Smelly residue: Garlic or onion aroma – beard oil with essential oils will cover.
First date food
Dating with a new beard? Avoid: Spaghetti, burger, wings, BBQ ribs, soups. Safe choices: Sushi (smaller pieces), risotto, steaks (cut with cutlery), salad (no dressing dripping down your beard).
Accept reality
Beards and food just sometimes collide. The best approach is be ready (napkins, toilet mirror), have a sense of humor and don't let it stress you out. Every barber knows this.
