Barbershop Etiquette: How to Behave at the Barber

A visit to a barbershop is more than a haircut — it is a social ritual with its own rules. Knowing the basics of barbershop etiquette helps you receive the best service and makes your barber’s work easier.

Before your visit

Make a booking: Respect your barber’s time and the time of other clients. Arrive on time: Ideally, arrive five minutes before your appointment. If you cannot attend: Cancel with sufficient notice, ideally at least 24 hours in advance.

Communicating with your barber

Be specific: “I want it short” does not provide enough information. Bring reference photos and explain what you like. Trust the professional: If your barber suggests an adjustment, there is usually a good reason. Ask questions: Your barber will be happy to explain.

During the haircut

Sit upright: Constant movement makes precise work difficult. Put your phone aside: Repeated calls can be distracting. Conversation: Pay attention to your barber’s signals and adapt accordingly.

Hygiene

Arrive with clean hair, ideally without styling products, and observe basic personal hygiene. Avoid overpowering fragrances.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in the Czech Republic, but it is appreciated. If you are satisfied, 10–15% or simply rounding up the total is customary.

After the haircut

If something does not feel right, say so immediately and give the barber a chance to adjust it. If you are satisfied, positive feedback and recommendations are always appreciated.

Loyalty

A barber who knows your hair and preferences can consistently provide a better service than someone meeting you for the first time.
