Challenges of thick hair
Thick hair tends to gain volume in unwanted places – typically on the sides of the head, creating a „helmet“ effect. They are harder to dry, hold styling harder and often look messy even shortly after a visit to the barbershop.
Thinning techniques
Texturization is a key technique for thick hair. The barber uses special scissors (trimmers) or a razor to remove the mass from the inside without shortening the visible length. The result is lighter, more mobile hair.
Point cutting – cutting to the ends – creates natural ends and removes a dull, heavy look. Slicing removes mass along the length of the hair. An experienced barber combines these techniques for optimal results.
Recommended cuts
Textured crop – a short cut with a natural texture where thinning creates airiness. Undercut – removing volume on the sides and leaving length on top works great. Taper fade – a gradual transition naturally reduces volume on the sides.
Avoid cuts with too long sides or uniform length – these will only accentuate excess volume.
Home care
Use light products – heavy waxes and pomades they weigh down the hair and accentuate the volume. A mattifying paste or light cream is a better choice. When drying with a hair dryer, direct the air downwards in the direction of hair growth – to prevent puffiness.
Shampoo for volume is paradoxically the last thing you need. Choose smoothing or moisturizing formulas that calm the cuticle.
Frequency of cutting
Thick hair loses its shape quickly. Plan to visit the barbershop every 3-4 weeks. Between visits, you can request thinning without shortening the length – you keep the cut but restore the lightness.
